Rosie’s Dog Beach in California has set some rules regarding animals on the beach. That’s why it is a perfect pet-friendly spot for vacation. This place is California’s first legal dog beach. 

This dog-friendly California beach is between Granada and Roycroft Avenues in Belmont Shore Neighbourhood. Rosie’s Dog Beach is a 4.1-acre-long where dogs can run freely on the sand or play in the water. 

The area offers various dog-friendly hotels, rentals, and restaurants. The beach hosts several events with dogs. The area has dog parks, fishing piers, museums, and things a vacationer would want to do.

  • The Dog Zone is open from 6 am to 8 pm.
  • Dogs are allowed leash-free.
  • The dog must be under visual and voice control.
  • Only one dog per adult is allowed.
  • The dog’s collar with its tags must be visible.

  • Dogs outside the permitted area must be on a 6-foot leash.

Rosie’s Dog Beach Dog Licensing

Dogs four months old must have licensing. If applicable, owners must provide a current rabies vaccination certificate, prior licensing history, and neutered or spayed information. The provided tag must be attached to the dog permanently.

The fee reduction applies to senior residents. A late fine is charged for license renewal. Tags can be obtained from the municipality anytime and are valid for up to 12 months. Microchipping is available for dogs, and it helps reduce fees.

About Rosie’s Dog Beach – Long Beach, CA

On June 24, 2001, for the first time in Long Beach history, dogs were permitted on the beach leash-free, despite resistance from residents that the dogs would leave a mess behind. The ordinance passed to allow dogs on the beach. Justin Rudd and his bulldog Rosie were the main organizers who arranged and hosted this event.

From August 2003 to October 31, 2004, daily off-leash access began on the beach led by Rudd. In 2004, Long Beach Authorities approved making this a permanent “Dog Beach Zone.” Honoring the memories of Justin’s bulldog, Rosie the Beach was named after her in 2010. 

The beach is south of Ocean Blvd between Granada and Roycroft Avenue. It is 4.1 acres long with a marvelous view of the ocean. The area is unfenced to allow dogs to run leash-free. They can play in the water or can stroll the sandy beach shores. 

The beach has a nearby dog park called La Bella Fontana Park. Rosie’s Dog Beach hosts events like the Bulldog Beuty Contest and Say Cheese Long Beach! The photo contest, Riley’s Red Wagon Book Swap, is held there.

  • Professional dog trainers are disallowed from using the dog training zone.
