Arroyo Burro Beach County Park is ten minutes from Santa Barbara, and Cliff Drive near Hope Ranch is beautiful. Surrounded by cliffs and coastline. This vacation area is a hot spot for water activities like – surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, swimming, etc.

Arroyo Burro has a rich history known as Hendry’s Beach by locals. Six acres of the park were purchased from the State of California in 1947, and 6.8 acres were leased to the county. In 1968, the state gave this land to the county. In 1990, a private company offered them additional space for a parking lot. 

This beach is perfect for sunbathing, picnicking, and spending time outdoors with pets. The area has a Boathouse Restaurant offering delicious foods, cocktails, and happy hour. Nearby Douglas Family Preserve has a beautiful terrain path, and on Elings downhill, paragliders can be seen reaching the sky.

The place allows dogs on leashes. They can walk along the sand and swim in the water. Self-serving doggy-wash stations are available. Just a little walk to the east side is an off-leash zone. Douglas Family Preserve is just above the beach, where canines can enjoy off-leash.

Arroyo Burro Beach houses the Watershed Resource Center, an educational program.  In this place, they teach how to preserve water, the importance of watershed resources, and how humans impact it. This has become a famous site for field trips for teaching purposes.

The trail departs from Arroyo Burro Road, east of Rancho Oso, and ascends a north-facing slope for 3.5 miles. Madrone trees are abundant in this region.

To reach the starting point from Santa Barbara, take Hwy 101 north for 10 miles, then Hwy 154 northwest for 7 miles, and finally head east on Paradise Road. The trailhead is located 1/4 mile up Arroyo Burro Road, across the river, and on the right side near the large cottonwood trees.
