Plumb Beach is a tiny yet beautiful oasis in New York City. This beautiful shoreline is a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. It was named after wild plum trees that grew here in ancient times. Remains of the popular colonial grain mill are still found here. The area is popular among kiteboarders and windsurfers.

Many birds and animals use the Plumb for nesting and feeding. In May-June, the beach is a breeding place for horseshoe crabs, which lay their eggs in the sand all along the shoreline. Famous Ring-Billed Gulls also come here in search of food. This place is well-connected to Gerritsen Beach and Sheepshead Bay.

Visitors can see a few rare birds in and around the place. There’s a sandy tidal marsh behind the dunes. Here, various salt-tolerant plants are spotted. The famous & rare Dove Snails are found on this beach. A variety of other fish are also sighted on Plumb Beach.  

Plumb Beach Horseshoe Crab

Plumb Beach is a popular landing point for the famous Horseshoe Crabs. On the beach, over 3000 crabs surf yearly from May-end to mid-June. They visit here to lay eggs and breed. Thousands of eggs are found in the sand all over the shoreline. Visitors are prohibited from disturbing these crabs on the beach.
